The vote is in...and Grand Cayman wins the first island to share! Thank you to everyone who voted, those of you who wanted to hear about the cruise...don't worry...I will get to that soon enough!
Located just south of Cuba and to the west of Jamaica, Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, and so far, it is my favorite island in the Caribbean. The two sister islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are located off to the northeast. The island of Grand Cayman is surrounded by reef which makes for an extra ordinary landscape. The destination is well known for it's snorkeling and scuba diving experiences being some of the best in the world (In my opinion)! The island is 22 miles long and approximately 8 miles wide, which makes a day trip around the island very possible. The Cayman Islands are a territory of the U.K., so yes, you do need to have a passport to travel here...(more on that in a later blog...for those of you who know the story...laugh it up!..)
Six districts make up Grand Cayman: West Bay, George Town, Bodden Town, East End & North Side
Some of you may have heard of the famous Seven Mile Beach which can be found in the West Bay/George Town district. This area is by far the most traveled beach on the island. Seven Mile is known for it's pristine beaches and gorgeous turquoise water. Resorts and Restaurants line this part of the island which makes it a great tourist area. This area is gorgeous, and a wonderful place to stay, however, it is not my choice. I've stayed on this side of the island 2 out of the 3 times I've visited, but the North Side/East End is by far my recommendation!
George Town is the capital of Grand Cayman. You will find the Cruise passengers in town here on a daily basis. There is tons of shopping and it's a fun place to check-out.
Heading towards the East End you will drive through Bodden Town. Here you will find a crossroad (Frank Sound Road to go North or Seaview Rd to travel towards the East End) to either take you to the north side or around to the east end of the island.
On the East End you will find a completely different vibe away from the hustle and bustle of Seven Mile Beach. This side of the island is quieter and much more relaxing. The terrain on this side of the island also changes and is very cool to experience. You have to checkout the Blow Holes!
Driving past the East End you will head into the North Side. On this side of the island you will find more of an old Island feel where a number of private villas have been built right on the coastline. The ocean on this side is completely opposite of Seven Mile Beach, right off the coast is great snorkeling from the shore. If you keep driving you will eventually run into the famous Rum Point, a pretty popular tourist destination.
Over the course of the past few weeks, I've really struggled with what I would share first because I have so many things to talk about with this island. This past week, my husband and I visited Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and I realized that our trip to Grand Cayman was by far one of the best trips I've ever been on! The island has so much to offer, it is safe, and I love that we can experience it without being tied down to a resort. All you have to do is jump into your car and check-out the next off the beaten path location.
I've decided that over the course of the next couple of months, I will share different experiences with you all like restaurants, beaches, activities, where we stayed, etc. and maybe even my passport experience! (Just so everyone can learn from my idiot mistake! LOL)
I am very excited to share my experience on the island and I hope you will stay tuned to learn more about what we did and saw during our week visit on this gorgeous island!!!
Love,
